AGCT was founded in October 2017 due to concerns about mismanagement and the effects of climate change on Cairngorm mountain.

Although projects outside Cairngorm fall within the Trust's objectives, the Board recognised that many members joined due to their interest in Cairngorm.  In May 2020, the Trust carried out a survey to collect feedback from members on potential projects beyond the Cairngorm estate. The results showed that 78% of respondents supported the Trust's pursuit of projects outside of the Cairngorm ski area.

The "Let's Bring Ice Back" campaign was launched by the Trust in February 2021, and within 10 months, the community and trust raised nearly £200,000 in donations and grant funding. These funds were used to purchase and build the Aviemore Ice Rink.

Aviemore Ice Rink opened in October 2021 and has not only provided additional all-weather facilities for locals and visitors it has positively boosted the profile of Aviemore and it has created local employment.

The Trust and community’s goal remains to return a full-sized ice sports facility to Aviemore and to be able to welcome back competitive ice events and tournaments to Aviemore and the Cairngorms.
